How Do I Get More Work?

  1. Be proactive. Supply teaching is often very competitive and work will not automatically come to you.
  2. The more schools you have listed the more chances you will have to get work. Be willing to travel in every direction, but be careful not to choose schools that too far away i.e. factor in realistic travelling times. Also make sure you know where all your nominated schools are located.
  3. Be flexible and make yourself available for daily bookings as much as possible. Also consider making yourself available for contracts as many schools are looking for a teacher willing to do both types of work at their school.

Note - if you are unavailable for a period of time during the term (e.g. you go on holidays for a month) then let TRACER know you are unavailable.

  4. Send a flyer about yourself including your teaching skills and experience to all schools you are interested in working at. Communicate the benefits you can bring to the school. Make sure you leave your contact details and be willing to discuss your resume or arrange a visit.
  5. Network with other relief teachers and within school communities to make yourself known.
  6. Research the needs of schools on your preferred list and evaluate how you can meet their needs. Find out what qualities they are looking for in a relief teacher.
  7. Get to know the culture of the schools you have listed. Make sure you understand their school policies and know how to actively support them.
  8. Upgrade your skills and knowledge. Be across the current curriculum. If required, seek a reassessment of your current ranking.
  9. Be professional at every opportunity. A good recommendation can lead to repeat bookings. Schools naturally want the best teachers possible who will contribute positively to the school - so be on time, be prepared, be organised and bring a great attitude.
  10. Remember that relief teaching can be infrequent and demand always seems to diminish at the beginning and end of each term and around public holidays, show days and pupil free days.
